Little Girl "Heart" Birthday Cake

At last a chance to make a birthday cake for a little girl.  The cake is a vanilla butter cake with vanilla butter cream, and is covered in white fondant icing.  The "little girl" on top was made by hand and is all fondant icing.  Not too bad for a first attempt at a "little person"....:-)

Scary Spider Birthday Cake

** The fly!! **

This was a special request from my son for his birthday.....he knew exactly what he wanted.  It was fun to make and the spider and fly were special creations by Tony (my creative director).  The cake is covered in fondant icing and the decorations are all made of fondant icing as-well.  The spider was surprisingly easy to make and is the first 3D character that Tony and I have made.  The web was made by passing the fondant icing through the spaghetti attachment of our pasta maker (which has never been used for pasta......lol).  The web threads all came out long and even, which was the key to making it look good, as you could string the webs in long lengths over the cake......there was no need to join bits together.  NOTE:  The fly was a last minute creation made to cover an imperfection in the fondant icing covering the cake......as it turned out after we made one fly we realised that a couple more would have been even better.  Next time!!

1st Communion Cake

I made this for a friend of mine for their sons first communion.  It's a simple chocolate mud cake with ganache, covered in white fondant icing.  The words, numbers, chalice and bread are fondant also.  My little number / word cutters worked really well.  The chalice is painted with gold edible paint.  One coat of paint wasn't enough......I applied several coats.  It was easier to paint the chalice before sticking it to the cake.

Soccer Ball Cake

This is a vanilla butter cake with butter cream frosting.  I used two pudding bowls to make the two halves of the ball and then joined them together.  A little trimming of the cake was required to get it looking round, but the butter cream helped to fill in any cracks and give it the round shape.  The outside (hexagons / pentagons) are white and black fondant......I bought both.  I cut the white hexagons using my hexagon cutters (approx $10 for a set) and had to cut the black pentagons by hand.  The green grass is simple "rich and smooth" icing with green food colouring.

Tip:  Try and get the cake as round as you can before you start sticking on the fondant shapes to ensure that the edges of the shapes fit together properly.  The hexagon cutter was fantastic....it made the cutting of the shapes so much easier.  I wouldn't recommend cutting the white fondant by hand.

Birthday Mud Cake With Chocolate Cigar Edging

Sssssssnake Cake

Exploding Flowers Mud Cake

This cake had three layers of mud cake sandwiched together with chocolate ganache.  I learnt how to make this at Planet Cake (unfortunately they don't run cake decorating courses in Melbourne anymore).  I was really pleased with my first attempt at this kind of cake.

Mud Cake With Chocolate Curls (Go Cats!!)

A simple butter cake with a Spiderman design piped on top.  A big hit with my son who loved "Spidey" at the time.

Harry Potter cake

This is the first fondant covered cake I ever made....... a two layered mud cake covered with fondant icing.  I was very happy with this cake.

Tug Boat Cake

A simple butter cake with butter cream icing and lolly decorations.  Pipe cleaners are used for the ropes and for the smoke.  The water is just icing with blue / green food colouring spread over a cake board.

Racing Car Cake

My son loved this cake so much he tried to play with it......and was disappointed when it didn't move.
